The NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before becoming National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held that year. Today, the NFL is considered the most popular sports league in North America, with the highest average attendance of any professional sports league in the world. Much of its growth has been credited to former Commissioner Pete Rozelle, who controlled the league from 1960 - 1989. Overall annual attendance increased from three million when he begun, to seventeen million by the end of his term.
